California House 8, Factory, Prefab Process

Stairway to Heaven (or at least California House 8)

CA8_Stairs3
Stair_2While most of our modules are standard rectangular sizes, California House 8 had one module that broke out of the box (so to speak). Our factory fabricated the house’s entry staircase as a standalone module (check out the photo on the right of the mod in our structural steel yard). Then last week, in a surreal, Escher-esque moment of stairs in the sky, the module was delivered and installed as a completed piece along with the other fifteen modules of the home.

Prefab Early Adopters Value Technology and Sustainability

CA8_Install4

Yesterday the Santa Cruz Sentinel pointed to technology and sustainability as what attracted our client for California House 8 to prefab. Check out the article about the early adopters and the installation of California House 8 here: “S.C. technology guru pushing prefab as next big thing.”

Prefab Installation in California’s Central Coast

CA8_Install2
Despite the demand for precision on a tight site, all sixteen modules of California House 8 were installed in less than a day and half in California’s Central Coast. We started at 9 am on Tuesday, and Mod 16 was in place by 11 am on Wednesday.

Here you can see two bottom level modules come together on the steel foundation. If you peek in the room on the left, you can see the pre-installed custom casework. You can also see all that denim insulation keeping things nice and toasty!

We’ll be posting more pics from the installation over the next week or two as we explain various parts of the prefab process.

On the road again… Shippin’ mods

CA8_Trucks1

Like our dear friend Willie Nelson says, we’re on the road again with the delivery of California House 8 to the central coast. The first batch of shrink-wrapped modules left our factory late Monday evening and arrived at the site the next morning. We have two more module shipments before the installation next week.

And for you Willie Nelson fans out there, this one’s for you.

Enjoy!

Bring on the Mods! Site Preparations for California House 8

CA8

Next week, the 16 modules for California House 8 will leave our factory and work their way up California to the project site on the central coast.

Sitting on a narrow, steep site, the house has a site-built garage on the bottom level that acts as the foundation for two stories of prefab living spaces. A covered deck module (where the roof acts as another deck) cantilevers out above the garage. Check out the picture below that shows how our structural steel shop created and installed the large steel beams that support the 9-foot cantilever.
