Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

VISUAL ACOUSTICS won the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Austin Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Lone Star International Film Festival and Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival.(USA, 2009, 84 mins)

Panel Discussion on Heath Ceramics: Sunday, August 30th, 2pm

The Pasadena Museum of California Art will host a panel discussion about Edith Heath and Heath Ceramics in conjunction with their exhibition, Edith Heath: Tabletop Modernist, showing now thru September 20th.

PANEL: Ron Radziner, FAIA of Marmol Radziner, Cathy Bailey, Owner of Heath Ceramics, and Bill Stern, Director of the Museum of California Design.

Born in a small farming town in Iowa, rasied during the Depression, trained as a teacher in Chicago and relocated to San Francisco, Edith Heath parlayed her hobby as a wartime studio potter into a leading role in the story of American modernism. As “good design” began to garner the attention of businesses, consumers and musuem curators alike, Edith Heath and her husband Brian seized on California’s fascination with the outdoors, casual living, and a healthy lifestyle. The clean lines and sensible durability of their ceramics defined a new language for the tabletop and meshed perfectly with the pared-down aesthetic of the architecture and home furnishings of the period. The Heaths established themseves as talented chemists, engineers, form givers, factory owners, and most notably, ambassadors for a new kind of post-war living.
